Ramola Bachchan came to live in the UK with Ajitabh and their children in 1987. Her first priority was to update her qualifications, so she returned to university to get a degree in business administration. She then went on to law school and having completed her training at the prestigious law firm Lawrence and Graham in London, qualified as a solicitor. During this time she also undertook a Master's degree in International Law from the LSE.
Along the way, other opportunities beckoned. Romla spent several years working in media as a radion presenter with Radio Asia and as TV presenter for TV Asia. During this time, she also tried her hand at journalism, writing for various publications, her objective always being to projec the Asian community in Britain as successful, dynamic and glamorous.
In 1995, Romala set up her own public relations firm RB Promotions promoting business and culture between India and the UK. The company organised a variety of events to promote Indian restaurants, products, musical concerts, plays and exhibitions.
An important aspect of Romla's life in London has been to encourage the support for charitable organisations. In this respect, she has sought innovative ways for raising funds for good causes. Since the early 90's she has taken the initiative to mobilise the community to donate generously, and has a long list of memorable events to credit. She has successfully raised significant funds for a wide range of organisations including the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, Care International, NSPCC, SAARC Foundation, Cancer Relief Macmillan Fund and Pratham UK.
When asked what gives her inspiration in life, Ramola says, "My greatest pleasure comes from bringing diverse people together to create a better understanding".
