What
prompted
me
to
compile
this
book?
The
NEED
-
the
need
which
I
felt
while
working
as
Hony.
General
Secretary
of
the
Asian
Welfare
&
Cultural
Association
in
1974
and
the
wish
to
try
and
satisfy
a
long
felt
need
for
such
a
Guide
&
Directory.
That
such
a
need
exists
has
been
clearly
shown
by
the
wonderful
co-operation,
tremendous
support
and
encouragement
received
from
so
many
people.
When
I
began
the
job
in
November
1974,
I
had
to
decide
in
my
mind
which
subjects
to
cover.
It
was
aimed
to
provide
useful
information
business
names,
names
of
associations
and
organisations
and
individuals
who
are
working
in
various
fields
to
promote
the
Asian
cause
and
are
endeavouring
to
create
good
relations
with
other
communities.
The
purpose
of
this
book
is
therefore
to
show
how
Asians
inspite
of
the
numerous
difficulties
confronting
them
had
been
able
to
achieve
and
contribute
in
social,
cultural,
educational,
literary,
commercial,
religious
and
political
activities
in
Great
Britain.
This
might
serve
as
a
source
of
inspiration
for
the
community
and
the
coming
generation:
benefit
the
fellow
men
in
the
sub-continent
to
know
more
about
their
hardworking
people
abroad
and
would
be
a
living
record
of
the
Eastern
ideology
and
culture.
We
circulated
to
as
many
people
as
possible
for
details
we
are
grateful
for
all
those
who
kindly
completed
our
questionnaire
and
helped
to
make
this
book
possible.
Every
care
has
been
taken
in
extracting
information
from
the
notes
submitted
in
order
to
produce
this
volume.
These
have
been
edited
and
checked
to
achieve
the
high
degree
of
accuracy
still
allowing
for
possible
human
error.
May
we
express
in
advance
our
apologies
for
any
faults
which
may
occur
in
publication.
There
are
some
obvious
omissions
but
they
are
not
of
our
making.
Some
entries
arrived
too
late
for
inclusion
in
this
edition,
in
the
case
of
others
we
are
still
waiting
for
the
entries
promised.
We
do
hope
that
those
who
did
not
respond
this
year
will
do
so
in
good
time
for
the
next
edition.
This
first
edition
is
in
the
nature
of
an
experiment.
It
is
not
surprising
that
some
difficulties
were
encountered
as
there
has
been
no
precedent
to
follow;
but
now
that
the
foundations
are
laid,
I
sincerely
hope
to
be
able
to
re-publish
it
at
regular
intervals.
Asian
Observer
acknowledges
with
thanks
the
co-operation
given
by
the
statutory
bodies
and
voluntary
organisations
in
providing
information
for
this
book
and
to
many
individuals
who
gave
their
valuable
time
to
examine
the
directory
while
it
was
in
manuscript
form.
Their
comments
and
criticism
proved
most
helpful.
My
friends
had
been
friends
indeed,
the
wide
experience
of
the
community
work
that
they
possess
has
been
tremendous
value
in
my
work.
Grateful
acknowledgement
is
made
to
the
Standing
Conference
of
Asian
Organisations
in
the
U.K.
Peter
Gearing
&
Jane
Hammond
for
helping
at
every
stage
of
the
publication.
Thanks
are
also
due
to
the
Anglo-Indian
Art
Circle
for
their
generous
co-operation.
And
to
my
wife
Kanwaljit,
without
whose
help
and
co-operation
this
would
all
have
been
just
a
dream.
A
final
word
of
thanks
to
our
printers

the
proprietors

in
