Rt
HoIain Duncan Smith
MP
Leader of the Opposition
25th October 2001
The Conservative
Leader, Iain Duncan
Smith, has said that
there is no place
for racism in the
Conservative Party.
During this years
Asian of the Year
Awards dinner, Mr
Duncan Smith said:
"At the Conservative
Conference I said
that, as Party Leader,
I will be intolerant
of those who are intolerant
of others. I believe
in a United Kingdom
which is genuinely
open and inclusive
of all its citizens
and in which racism
and bigotry can have
no place."
He told his audience
that Britain is a
diverse society, made
up of many different
groups, communities
and cultural traditions,
which were a source
of strength for the
country.
"My aim is clear,"
he said. "It
is to broaden the
appeal of the Conservative
Party for British
Asians, and for all
members of the different
ethnic groups in Britain.
There is no place
in the Party for those
who extol the virtues
of a creed that demeans
people on the basis
of their ethnicity."
He said that the
Conservative Party
should reflect and
represent the diversity
of all the people.
Mr Duncan Smith said
he wanted to attract
Asians to the Party
at all levels and
to play a role in
the policy review
that has just got
underway.
